The Waterworks, Hackney Marshes, UK
(Lee Valley Regional Park Authority)
Restoration of a disused water treatment works to a new visitor centre which demonstrates the concept of natural succession from open water to woodland through a sequence of segmented filter beds.
The site includes an adjoining 9 hole golf course and driving range. The new visitor centre has extensive interactive interpretation relating to both succession and the role of water treatment in defeating the cholera outbreaks of Victorian London.
The project won a Civic Trust Green Flag Award and an English Heritage 'Green Heritage Site' Award in 2008.
